It isn't a crystal. It isn't a mineral. It grew in the sea. And for thousands of years, people believed it had the power to protect.
Coral is one of the oldest gem materials ever worn, and one of the most misunderstood.
In this guide, we'll reveal what coral actually is, why the Romans hung it around their children's necks, why the Victorians were obsessed with it, and why genuine coral jewellery is becoming harder to find.
And read to the end to find out which wedding anniversary coral is traditionally linked to.

What actually is coral?
Here's the surprising bit: precious coral comes from a living sea creature.
Tiny marine animals build branching, tree-like skeletons made of calcium carbonate. Over time, these colonies grow into small underwater bushes, often in deep water or dark sea caves. Natural pigments give the skeleton its famous colours, from the palest pink to peach, orange and deep red.
That's why coral is known as an organic gem, like pearl and amber.
The most famous precious coral, Corallium rubrum, lives mainly in the Mediterranean Sea.

Thousands of years of coral jewellery
Coral jewellery has been found in ancient Egyptian and prehistoric European burials, which tells you just how long people have treasured it.
🏛️ The Romans believed coral protected children, and it was often worn as a protective charm.
🇮🇹 In Italy, the town of Torre del Greco near Naples became famous as a centre for carving coral.
🎀 The Victorians adored coral. It was hugely fashionable in the 19th century, set into rings, brooches, necklaces and sentimental love tokens.
Coral is often associated with:
• Protection
• Vitality
• Good fortune
• Love
• A connection to the sea

The Victorian love token you can still wear today
The Victorians had a secret language of flowers, and the forget-me-not stood for true love and remembrance.
Our Victorian-inspired forget-me-not ring pairs peachy-pink coral with creamy seed pearls in 9ct yellow gold, with engraved shoulders just as the Victorians would have loved them. It would make a charming engagement ring for anyone who adores antique style.

Why is genuine coral getting harder to find?
Precious coral grows slowly, and decades of intensive fishing, along with climate change, have damaged wild colonies. Marine protected areas are now helping some colonies recover.
That means good-quality coral jewellery is something to treasure. We can only get our hands on a few pieces at a time, and once they're gone, they're gone.

How to care for coral jewellery
Coral is much softer than most gemstones, at around 3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. For comparison, sapphire scores 9. So coral needs a little extra love.
- Put it on last, after perfume, hairspray and make-up
- Keep it away from acids, cleaning products and household chemicals
- Don't use ultrasonic cleaners or jewellery dips
- Wipe it gently with a soft, damp cloth
- Store it separately so harder stones can't scratch it
Our on-site workshop can check settings and carry out repairs to keep your coral safe for years to come.
