Somewhere in your house, there's a little box of gold you never wear. A broken chain. A single earring. A ring that belonged to someone you loved.
Most people think of it as junk, or something too precious to touch. But that gold has a remarkable secret: it can be reborn, again and again, without ever wearing out.
And read to the very end for the one question you should always ask before anyone melts your gold.

Gold never dies
Unlike iron, gold doesn't rust, rot or break down over time. Melt it and it's still gold. Melt it again and it's still gold.
That's why gold has been melted down and reshaped for thousands of years. Which means the gold in an old ring could, in theory, have had several lives before it ever reached your family. A coin, a brooch, a pocket watch case... there's no way of knowing.
✨ Remodelling simply gives it its next one.

The secret to a perfect remodel: sorting your gold
Here's what surprises most people. Not all gold is the same, and knowing exactly what you have is the key to a beautiful result.
🟡 9ct gold is 37.5% pure gold. The rest is other metals.
🟡 18ct gold is 75% pure gold.
That's why each carat and colour is kept to its own standard, so your new piece comes out with a true, gorgeous colour and a proper hallmark.
So the first thing a good jeweller does is sort and test your pieces, working out exactly what you have before deciding what it can become.

The three ways old gold gets a new life
🔥 Melt and remake. The gold is melted, cleaned up and formed into something entirely new, from a chunky band to a signet ring.
💎 Keep the stones, change the setting. Old diamonds and gemstones are carefully removed, checked and reset into a fresh design.
🪡 Rework, don't replace. Sometimes the best answer is to keep most of the original and add to it, so the piece still feels like theirs.
Every piece in our workshop starts as an idea. This baroque pearl station necklace was handmade in-store by our very own Louise, inspired by a necklace worn by Mary Berry.

The surprises hiding in old jewellery
When old stones come out of their settings, they sometimes reveal things nobody expected.
Older diamonds were cut by hand, by eye, long before modern machinery. They often have a softer, chunkier sparkle than modern stones, and many people now actively look for that old-world glow.
And sometimes a stone everyone assumed was "just glass" turns out to be the real thing. That's why every stone is checked before it's reset.
If you love that old-world look but want something ready to wear, this handmade amethyst heart is full of vintage charm.

Old soul, new design
Lots of people who remodel want a piece that still feels antique. Victorian-style floral clusters and dainty trilogy rings are some of the most-loved looks, because they honour where the gold came from.

Remodelling old gold FAQs
Can old gold jewellery be melted down and remade?
Yes. Gold doesn't degrade, so it can be melted and reworked into a new design, as long as the different carats and colours are sorted first.
Can you mix 9ct and 18ct gold?
Jewellers keep them separate, so each one stays at its proper standard and your new piece comes out at a true, hallmarkable carat.
Can I keep the stones from my old ring?
Usually, yes. Stones are carefully removed, checked and reset, ready to shine in their new design.
Do I need to bring all my gold?
Bring everything you're considering. A jeweller can tell you what's usable and whether extra gold is needed for your design.

What our customers say
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — Vix Ottiwell
"I spent ages looking for the perfect engagement ring I found Eloise and wish I had known about it before! They didn't have my perfect ring so they made it for me! I'm so happy with it! Thank you all so much for making it! It was fast too!"

So, what's the one question to ask before anyone melts your gold?
"Can I keep a little piece of the original?"
Once gold is melted, the old hallmark, the engraving, the wear marks from decades of being loved... they're gone forever.
💛 Sometimes a section of the original band can be built into the new design, or the old engraving can be recreated inside. It's a small detail that means the story carries on, not just the gold.
