14.7 million years ago, a meteorite slammed into Earth. What it left behind is now one of the most talked-about gemstones in the world.
It's green. It's glassy. It fell from the sky. And people who wear it say it changed everything.
Meet Moldavite, the gemstone with an origin story so dramatic it sounds made up. Except it isn't.
In this guide, we'll reveal exactly where Moldavite comes from, why crystal lovers call it the ultimate "transformation stone", why you can only find it in one tiny corner of the planet, and how to make sure the Moldavite you buy is the real thing.
And read to the very end for the one question you should always ask before buying Moldavite.

What actually is Moldavite?
Picture this. Around 14.7 million years ago, a giant meteorite crashed into what is now southern Germany, creating a crater roughly 24 kilometres wide, known today as the Nördlinger Ries.
The impact was so violent that it melted the rock below and launched molten glass high into the air. That glass cooled as it flew, then rained down hundreds of kilometres away across what is now the Czech Republic, with smaller amounts in Germany and Austria.
That glass is Moldavite.
Scientists call it a tektite, a natural glass formed by a meteorite impact. Its name comes from the Moldau, the German name for the Vltava river in Bohemia, where much of it has been found. In Czech, it's called vltavín.
💎 Every single piece of genuine Moldavite on Earth came from that one event.

Why is everyone suddenly obsessed with Moldavite?
If you've spent any time on TikTok or Instagram crystal pages, you've probably seen Moldavite pop up. Here's why it has such a cult following:
🌍 It's from one place only. Most gemstones are mined in several countries. Genuine Moldavite comes from a single impact event, found in one small region of central Europe.
⏳ There will never be any more of it. No new Moldavite is forming. What's in the ground now is all there will ever be.
🌿 No two pieces look alike. Its wrinkled, sculpted surface was etched naturally over millions of years by groundwater. That texture is part of what makes rough cut Moldavite so special.
💚 That colour. A deep forest or mossy green, often with tiny bubbles and swirls inside. Hold it up to the light and it practically glows.
☄️ The story. Let's be honest: "this fell from the sky after a meteorite strike" is an incredible thing to say when someone compliments your ring.

The "transformation stone": why people say Moldavite changed their life
Now we get to the part that has crystal lovers talking.
In crystal healing traditions, Moldavite has a reputation unlike almost any other stone. It's often described as a high-vibration crystal that speeds up change, shakes up stuck situations and pushes you towards the life you're meant to be living.
Moldavite is often associated with:
• Transformation
• Spiritual awakening
• Intuition
• Letting go of the past
• New beginnings
Some wearers describe a sensation they call the "Moldavite flush", a feeling of warmth spreading through the body when they first hold the stone. Others say that after they started wearing it, big life changes seemed to follow: new jobs, new relationships, moving house, or finally walking away from something that wasn't working.
Is it the stone? Is it the intention you set when you put it on? That's something only you can decide. But it's easy to see why so many people describe it as life changing.
💎 Many crystal enthusiasts recommend starting slowly, wearing Moldavite for short periods at first and building up, as some find its energy intense.

Warning: there's a LOT of fake Moldavite out there
Here's the uncomfortable truth.
Because Moldavite is so popular and the supply is limited, imitations are everywhere, especially on cheap online marketplaces. And because Moldavite is chemically very close to ordinary glass, a cut and polished fake can be extremely hard to tell apart by eye.
Be cautious if you see:
- Prices that seem too good to be true
- Bright, perfectly even "bottle green" colour with no natural variation
- Identical-looking pieces sold in large quantities
- Repeating, moulded-looking surface patterns
- Sellers who can't tell you where the stone came from
This is exactly why buying from an experienced jeweller matters. At Eloise Jewellery, we've been helping customers choose gemstones since 1996, and our team is always happy to talk you through any piece before you buy.
We can only get our hands on a few Moldavite pieces at a time, and once they're gone, there's no guarantee when the next ones will arrive.
───────────────────────────────────────────────
Can you wear Moldavite every day?
Yes, with a little care.
Moldavite sits at around 5.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. That makes it softer than stones like sapphire, so it's worth treating kindly.
That's one reason we love a bezel setting. A smooth band of sterling silver wraps around the edge of the stone, helping protect it from everyday knocks while showing off that incredible natural texture.
To keep your Moldavite looking its best:
- Take it off for the gym, gardening and cleaning
- Avoid harsh chemicals, perfume and hairspray
- Store it separately so harder stones can't scratch it
- Clean gently with warm water and a soft cloth
Our on-site workshop can also check settings, carry out repairs and resize rings, so your piece can be looked after for years to come.

Moldavite FAQs
Is Moldavite from space?
Not quite, but close. Moldavite was formed on Earth by the heat and force of a meteorite impact, so it was born from a cosmic collision rather than falling as a space rock itself.
How old is Moldavite?
Scientists date the impact that created Moldavite to around 14.7 million years ago.
Where does Moldavite come from?
Genuine Moldavite is found mainly in the Czech Republic, particularly southern Bohemia and Moravia, with smaller finds in Germany and Austria.
What does Moldavite mean spiritually?
In crystal traditions, Moldavite is associated with transformation, spiritual growth, intuition and new beginnings.
Is Moldavite rare?
Yes. It comes from a single event, it's found in only one small region, and no more is being created. That's why genuine pieces are so sought-after.

───────────────────────────────────────────────
So, the one question you should always ask before buying Moldavite?
"Where did this stone come from?"
A jeweller you can trust will be happy to answer. If a seller can't, or won't, that's your sign to walk away.
