You take off your ring and there it is: a green band on your finger. Your first thought? "It's fake." But that's not always true.
Green skin is one of the most common jewellery worries there is, and one of the most misunderstood.
Read to the very end for the one thing a green mark does NOT prove.
───────────────────────────────────────────────
The culprit: copper
In most cases, a green mark comes from copper.
🧪 When copper meets moisture, sweat, soap or lotion, it reacts and forms copper compounds, which are green. It's the same reason old copper roofs and the Statue of Liberty turned green over time.
That green layer rubs off onto your skin. It's generally harmless and washes off with soap and water.
───────────────────────────────────────────────
The surprise: copper is in lots of real jewellery
Here's what most people don't realise. Copper isn't just in cheap costume jewellery.
🥈 Sterling silver is 92.5% silver. The remaining 7.5% is other metals, usually copper, to make it strong enough to wear.
🌹 Rose gold gets its pink colour from copper.
🟡 9ct gold is 37.5% gold, and the rest is alloy, often including copper.
So genuine, hallmarked jewellery can occasionally leave a mark too, especially on warm days or after handwashing.

Why it happens to some people and not others
Everyone's skin is different. How much you sweat, the products you use, even the weather can all make a difference.
💧 Hand cream, sun cream, swimming pools, cleaning products and long hot showers are some of the most common triggers.

Simple habits for happy skin and gleaming jewellery
🚿 Slip rings off for washing up, showers, swimming and the gym
💄 Let lotions and perfume dry first, then add your jewellery
🧽 Pat pieces dry and give them a quick wipe with a soft cloth

Green skin FAQs
Is it harmful if jewellery turns your skin green?
It's generally harmless and washes off. If your skin becomes itchy, red or sore, stop wearing the piece and speak to a pharmacist or doctor.
Does real silver turn your skin green?
It can. Sterling silver contains a small amount of copper, which can occasionally react with skin and moisture.
How do you get green off your skin?
Soap and warm water usually does the trick.

So, what does a green mark NOT prove?
It doesn't prove your jewellery is fake.
🔍 Plenty of genuine sterling silver, rose gold and 9ct gold contains copper. The real test is the hallmark: look for 925 on silver, or 375, 585 or 750 on gold.
So before you bin that ring, check inside the band. Your "fake" might just need a quick clean.
